Jobs that require high emotional intelligence, creativity, and physical dexterity are much harder to automate. It  is not just automation that threatens the 9-5 pack. The rise of the gig economy, which emphasizes outcomes and eliminates the middleman, has made it fashionable and fiscally strategic for employers to move toward consultants and freelancers and away from full-time workers. Given these developments, its  no wonder that traditional jobs are being replaced by online delivery platforms and/or consolidated into multifunctional roles. The career advice of the future is to be the  automater rather than the automated. No longer is being an expert in one role good enough; tomorrows irreplaceable employee will be useful in many ways. What will the (near) future of employment be? Lets take a look at some examples: Health Experts Physicians are relatively safe, but the physician/MBA, physician/pharmacologist, physician/JD, or physician/engineer will be in very high demand moving forward. Possessing the unique ability to strategically address industry changes and trends, these specialists in medicine, pharmacy, medical devices, and their  corresponding global legal issues have the talents and wherewithal needed to navigate the medical needs of the future. At the other end of the spectrum will be certified nursing assistants (CNAs), the lower-cost alternative to the almost non-existent licensed practical nurse (LPN). A dearth of nurse educators means fewer LPNs are produced in favor of turning out the more highly trained registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners. Personal Finance Fiduciary financial planners look out for their clients financial health and well-being. They evaluate lifestyles and life stages and make recommendations to help customers strategically plan for mortgages, college expenses, retirements, and any potential rainy day that may arrive. As if that werent enough,  fiduciary financial planners also utilize the same software, algorithms, and high-volume discounts as  other financial advisors, which will likely force traditional stock traders to look for  new jobs to replace their extraordinary salaries. Logistics Moving things from point A to point B with military precision will be critical as the practice of just in time delivery continues to spread. Transport vehicles will include drones, trucks, driverless cars, trains, and 18-wheelers. People in logistics will help companies win business, and theyll be on the front lines of the war for talent. Do logistics benefit from automation? Clearly. However, it is people who will plan for automation, design the machines, and manage the exceptions. Conversely, a little automation can be good for the overall growth of an industry. When was the last time you took a taxi or traditional car service? Cant remember? Thats not  surprising, given the meteoric rise of app-based ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft. Car service fleets have been relegated to special occasions like weddings, proms, and company outings. Look for further industry revolution as driverless vehicles become the norm. The Reinvention Economy Humans and computers can live in symbiotic harmony as long as we understand where each fits in the employment ecosystem. Manufacturing jobs of the Rust Belt  will never return. Sprawling malls anchored by department stores have become  ghost towns. Automation succeeds when it replaces routine, repeatable, and error-prone tasks; technology makes humans faster at their jobs. Reinvention is the central theme for workers in todays economy. Preparing for future employment in an ever-expanding knowledge economy requires flexibility, creativity, and critical thinking. Skilled trades that require manual dexterity will always be in demand. High-touch professions like education, medicine, and law enforcement will never be fully automated. How do you reinvent yourself for the future? You dont. You reinvent yourself for the here and now. He helps to create and deliver recordings. He makes sure that the end product is the best it can be when a band or musician is recording or mastering a song or even an entire album.   The role requires talent and expertise, and it includes wearing many hats. The producer often gives performance advice and direction to musicians or makes sure the sound engineer is on track. His job is to oversee every detail of a song or album in the hope of producing a major hit.   So how are producers paid for all this work? More often than not, they receive points.   Talking Business: Producer Points  Definition Some producers are paid  a flat fee  or an advance for their work, but many are paid in royalties  or points.  Producer points are also sometimes referred to as  points, album points, producer percentage, or producer royalties. Theyre a percentage of revenues earned by the work. One point is equal to 1 percent, and points can be awarded in a few different ways: They might be paid on the entire album. For example, the producer might get 3 points or 3 percent of the royalties a record earns.  Points might also be paid just on particular songs on an album. If the producer gets 2 points on 5 songs on an album that includes 12 songs, he would get  5/12 of 2 percent of the royalties earned by the album. Points arent awarded to all producers, and the number of album points given can vary a great deal, anywhere from 1 point up to 5 points or more. It depends on the producer, her talent, her reputation, her experience, and the quality of her overall work. In the art world, Picasso could be expected to earn far more points than an artist who has just sold her first painting. Deals are sometimes structured so that the points a producer receives increase as the album meets certain sales thresholds. And yes, most producers do ask for points, at least those who are business-savvy and who know the industry well. Although 3 points might not sound like much, it can be a significant windfall if a song or album is a blockbuster hit.   3 Percent of What?   Points are sometimes paid based on  dealer prices for the album, but sometimes theyre paid on the retail price. Theyre often paid on the suggested retail list price (SRLP), which is an estimate of what most retailers will charge for the product, but they might be paid on the published price to dealers (PPD). Think of this as the wholesale price of the product. Needless to say, the basis can make a big difference in what the producer earns. If youre negotiating a contract for yourself, youll probably want to go after an SRLP percentage.   Deals are increasingly being seen where the percentage is based on the artists actual revenues- not the labels revenues. This percentage might be much higher than just a few points because the artist is already receiving just a certain portion of the labels revenues. Songwriting Credits Points and songwriting credits are two different things. It occasionally happens that a producer will take a hand in tweaking an existing song or in helping to create one from scratch to achieve that desired hit record. In this case, he might be entitled to a songwriting credit in addition to points for his other work on the project.   Other Arrangements   Its not out of the question that a producer will take on a job in exchange for an hourly rate or a flat fee instead, but make no mistake- you get what you pay for. Anyone willing to accept these terms might not be the best the industry has to offer.   The Music Producer Agreement Terms regarding points should be set out in a signed and dated music producer agreement before the recording process begins.  A music producer or the producer’s agent might choose to sign a deal with an individual artist, a band, a production company, or a record company. The  agreement could be for just a master or an entire album. Promoters are the people in charge of putting on the show. They work with agents â€" or in some cases, directly with the bands â€" and with clubs and concert venues to arrange for a show to take place. Promoters are also in charge of making sure the word gets out about that show. They also take care of arranging the incidentals, like hotels and backline for the band. In a nutshell, it is the promoters job to make sure things go off without a hitch. Note that this kind of promoter is different from a radio plugger or PR agent. What Jobs a Promoter Should Do If the promoter is not tied to a specific venue, they should: Collaborate with bands and agents to agree on a date for a performanceNegotiate a deal with the band/agent for the show. What fee will be paid? Will the promoter provide accommodation?Book a venue for the agreed upon datePromote the upcoming gig to the local press, social media channels and radio. Promoters make their money off of the proceeds generated by a show. Promoters can either have two kinds of deals with bands:  Pay the band a set fee, no matter how many people buy tickets, and a  door-split deal. With both deals, a promoter can easily lose money on a show. Making money as a promoter requires careful planning. Why Promoters Need a Contract When you are dealing with large sums of money, a contract is always a must. But many indie music promoters who know they wont be making much money, if any, on a gig often skip the contract. Even if no money is exchanging hands at the end of the night, though, it is still a good idea for a band and promoter to have a contract that clearly states things like whether or not the promoter will provide accommodation, who is taking care of the backline, when the soundcheck is, how long the bands set will be, what the band will get for a rider, and of course, how any profits will be split. It helps avoid confusion later. How to Become a Promoter There are two ways you can get into promoting. You can contact promoters and venues in your area and offer your services and learn the ropes that way, or you can try to get your promoting career off the ground yourself. If you want to work for yourself, start small. Pick a favorite local band and offer to promote a show for them. Book the venue, contact the local media, get the word out on social media and put up some posters advertising the show. If you do a good job, other bands will find you, and as you become an established promoter in your area, bands from out of the area will find you as well. Making Money as a Promoter Promoters who work with mega stars who sell out huge venues can make some serious money. But indie music promoters can easily find themselves working all day, every day, and only getting deeper into debt. Many promoters have a day job that supports their promotion job. If you want to become a promoter, you need a clear understanding of the money involved, and you need to make deals with bands and venues very carefully. For any given show, a promoters expenses include: Venue rentalAdvertising (posters, media advertisements, online marketing costs, etc.)Backline rentalsAccommodation for the bandRiderPayment for the band You cant get around some of these fees, like the venue fee, but there are ways of mitigating some of the expenses involved in promoting â€" and if you want to stay in this for the long haul, you need to cut costs as much as you can. For instance, ask the band/label/agent to print posters and send them to you, instead of you taking that cost on. Dont provide accommodation if the bands show is not going to generate enough money to cover the costs, or if you must, put the band up at your house. Dont provide overly generous riders â€" a few waters and a few beers is fine. Split the cost of renting special equipment with the band. You can also cut down on some of your expenses by working under a door-split deal arrangement, instead of paying the band a set fee. That way, you make all of your money back first, and then the band gets paid if you get paid. Bigger artists will balk at this kind of deal and will want a set fee - paying a set fee is fine, and even ideal, when youre working with a band who you know will sell enough tickets to recoup your costs. But if the band youre putting on is just building a name for themselves, a door-split deal is fair for everyone. Make sure the band tries to sell some merchandise at the show to give them some extra money. If you have a door-split deal, and the show didnt make any money, a nice promoter might throw the band a little bit of gas money, which can go surprisingly far in earning you a reputation as a good promoter. The truth is that many indie shows lose money, especially shows featuring new bands. As long as you are not withholding earnings from the band, it is perfectly OK to set up your shows so you lose as little as possible. Most up-and-coming bands will recognize that and will work with you. After all, if you succeed, they succeed. Being fair to both parties (yourself included) is the name of the game.

Youll need to act quickly, especially if your job search was merely exploratory and you want to keep your current job. What to do next depends on what you were doing when you caught, and how much your manager has discovered. What To Do if the Boss Catches You Job Searching In today’s competitive employment climate, it isn’t unusual for employers to try to “steal” top talent from their competitors. Perhaps you werent actively seeking employment, but were solicited by a recruiter or another employer to interview. If so, tell your boss that you love your job, you want to stay, and you were simply interested in hearing what the company had to say. Make it very clear that you dont have plans to leave in the near future (if, in fact, thats the case). If you have built a strong rapport with your employer during your tenure, it may well happen (in a best case scenario) that they inquire about what benefits another employer is offering you and decide to give you a comparable raise, a more flexible work schedule, or other benefits. When You Were Considering a Job Change Were you considering a job change? Lies always seem to find a way to come back to haunt you! Dont be surprised if your boss is upset for quite a while, whether or not you tell the truth. You should realize that she may wonder if and when you are going to resign and whether she should consider replacing you. Just remember - these are routine consequences when you decide to actively pursue a new job you hope to do for the rest of your working career. How Not to Get Caught When you dont want your current employer to find out that you are job hunting, there are steps you can take to keep your job search confidential. These include requesting that a potential employer keep their knowledge of your application secret, and posting your resume on job sites that allow you to keep your contact information and current employer’s name under wraps. By no means should you conduct your job search on your employer’s campus. Use a private email address and cell phone and your personal computer or tablet â€" not your work computer â€" to conduct your career search. If an employer calls you on your cell phone while you’re in the office, let them leave a message and return their call as soon as possible from somewhere that your conversation won’t be overheard. Finally, be careful what information you share about your job search on social media sites like LinkedIn, Twitter, or Facebook.
